A sweat-stained teachers' lounge in a public middle school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at 6:55 AM, where a photocopier is churning out the last of 300 packets and the principal's car has just pulled into the parking lot.
Double has written an unauthorized replacement unit for the eighth-grade civics class — a two-week simulation where students run a fictional country, complete with hyperinflation, coups, and a functioning black market in hall passes. The original teacher quit Friday. The principal explicitly said 'just show the textbook videos.' But Double already printed 300 packets, recruited the janitor to play the UN inspector, and promised the kids something 'they'd actually remember.' The principal's morning meeting starts in nine minutes, and the photocopier is still warm.
“One kid in that class told me civics was 'the nap before lunch.' I'm not showing a DVD from 2006, I'm starting a revolution — an educational one.”
“You gave twelve-year-olds a functioning black market and you're surprised I have concerns? The janitor is wearing a blue helmet made of construction paper.”
By second period, the black market in hall passes had inflated so aggressively that a sixth-grader traded his inhaler for three bathroom passes and the janitor — still in the blue helmet — attempted to impose economic sanctions on the cafeteria. The principal walked in during the coup phase, where a twelve-year-old named Marcus had declared himself dictator-for-life and was demanding tribute in Takis.
Marcus retained power for forty-seven minutes, which is longer than most real coups — that's LEARNING.
The district office called it 'the most detailed incident report they'd ever received,' so at least someone appreciated the worldbuilding.
