The Parking Meter Nickel

A cracked asphalt parking lot outside a DMV in Tucson, Arizona at 2:17 PM, where the dashboard thermometer reads 114°F and the meter has exactly one minute left.

Double and Bust have been circling this block for thirty-one minutes looking for parking, and the only open meter has a single nickel jammed sideways in the coin slot. The meter maid's golf cart is idling two rows over, and the DMV closes in 43 minutes — they need to renew Bust's expired registration before the grace period ends at midnight. Double wants to slam the meter with the heel of his boot to dislodge the nickel and feed it their quarters. Bust wants to abandon the spot and try the overflow lot six blocks away that may or may not still exist.

One good whack and that nickel pops free — I've fixed vending machines, jukeboxes, a marriage. Same principle.

B
Bust

The meter maid is literally watching us, and you want to assault municipal property with your shoe in front of a building full of government employees.

Double's boot heel connects with the meter at the exact angle that not only dislodges the nickel but shoots it in a perfect arc onto the meter maid's windshield, where it rolls harmlessly into a cup holder. The meter maid, startled awake from what was clearly a heat nap, waves them off without even looking up, and the freed coin slot swallows their quarters like nothing happened.

Percussive maintenance, baby — the oldest technology on earth.

I want it on the record that we are alive only because that woman was unconscious from heatstroke.
